I Have Neither

by Hugh A Tague

My lips dry and cracked
thirst for a droplet of moisture
water and shade are life
in this barren wasteland.

My eyes scan
the vast sea of sand
the intense sun’s heat
distorts the horizon
the world beyond the desert
melts before me.

Each step I tread
my stride becomes more labored
as my feet sink
into the burning sands.

A shadow drifts past me
I look to the sky
squinting the sun from my sight
I see a vulture’s silhouette
its beak hungry
for the nourishment within me.

My brain boiling inside my skull
I loose balance
falling to my knees
as if guided
by the hand of God.

My spirituality
compels me to pray
I know that soon
I shall be one with the earth.

My lips dry and cracked
thirst for a droplet of moisture
water and shade are life
in this barren wasteland….

I Have Neither.
